A People in a Place, Week 8 “Mute Idols and a Talking God”
Smitchell   -

In 1 Corinthians 12, Paul is speaking to a group of people who worshipped idols before becoming Christians. In contrast to their old, mute idols, Paul dwells on the Holy Spirit who interacts with us. To set the scene, we hear about how Jesus taught His disciples not to be afraid and to anticipate the coming of the promised Spirit. During the years before his crucifixion, Jesus was with His disciples, walking, eating, sleeping, and working with them every day, He knew that His death would leave them feeling abandoned and ill-equipped. In John 14, Jesus tells them that the Father will send “another like” him, a Helper to be with them. A promise he fulfilled in Acts 2. In chapter 12, we see the implications of this helper as he makes us into “the body” of Jesus.
