Veterans Day 2025

Smitchell   -

Given the five-year US average (2020-2024), roughly 69% of Americans identify as Christians, with Roman Catholics making up 21% of that number. The military percentages skew somewhat higher overall, but with fewer Catholics: 75% and 20%, respectively. Those who serve in the US military tend to be more Christian than the general population, specifically more Protestant and non-denominational. The old saying, “There are no atheists in a foxhole,” may not be literally true, but it seems there are fewer of them.

Perhaps this is because those who serve our nation in the armed forces, “…bear our freedoms on their backs,” as Pastor Bo acknowledged yesterday when she prayed for our vets and their families. That phrase has stuck with me because it carries echoes of Jesus’ words:

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30)

Many of them consider it a privilege to serve, but their responsibilities to their fellow citizens still constitute a heavy load. They make less money than they could in private industry. They are often away from family and friends for extended periods, straining their most supportive relationships. Those who serve in front-line units perform dangerous and demanding jobs, even during peacetime. Most do so exceedingly well and honorably, risking life and limb. With these stressors, it’s not surprising that so many turn to God for strength and protection.

Even though we will not meet tonight, let us still devote ourselves to praying for them on this Veterans Day. Let us ask God’s blessings on them, and offer gratitude for both their service and sacrifices.

So this year, let us pray this way:

  • Express thanks for their service: Heavenly Father, we pause to honor and remember those who have bravely served our nation, and we give thanks for their courage and sacrifice, for the freedoms we enjoy today because of their dedication
  • Ask for blessings: Lord, bless all who have served with courage and compassion, and fill every veteran’s heart with peace
  • Pray for the wounded and afflicted: Bring healing to those who are injured in body or spirit, and comfort those who still carry the burdens of war, especially for those suffering PTSD and mental health issues
  • Support for our vets: Guide our nation to support our veterans in their journeys, providing them with the respect and the resources they need
  • Support for their families: Be with these families and sustain them as well

Love ya!
